RECAP
TAHOE
2024

Blizzard of the century hits Tahoe! All Sitzmarkers survive!

Our trip to Heavenly started off without a hitch as everyone made their flights and there weren’t any delays. We all loaded onto the bus and made the requisite stop for food and drinks. Once we arrived at Forest Suites we were greeted with help with our luggage as well as a selection of adult beverages to help stave off dehydration. Once settled in Jeanne, Marta, Paul and Mary Lou opened up their condo to a welcome party. Drinks were flowing and snacks were available for all. It was a nice chance to chat and plan for the upcoming week. People also explored the area and discovered that it was a short walk to the gondola as well as restaurants, casinos and shops.

Sunday dawned sunny and light winds. It was a short walk to the gondola and we were off for a day on the slopes. The skiing was wonderful as were the views from the mountain. Several members also got to meet Wheeler, the avalanche rescue dog! After a day of skiing we headed to Al’s Pub for a wine and cheese reception. Our bartender(and GM), Jerry, was wonderful and even shared his favorite prosecco with several members. He also had a wealth of information on things to do and see in the area. Unfortunately there was another event scheduled after us so he was forced to ask us to leave but told us to feel free to stop by the bar for refills, which in true Sitzmark fashion we took him up on it!

Unfortunately it was a bit windy on Monday so most of the mountain was shut down, including the gondola. Instead of skiing, well except for Glenn who ventured out, the rest of us spent the day exploring the town. We had a nice time shopping, eating, drinking and visiting the casinos.

Tuesday was another bluebird day and we hit the slopes early to take advantage of the weather. Things were going well until the dreaded message from our tour group company that they needed to talk to me and I knew it wasn’t going to be good news. I was informed that a blizzard was moving in and the bus company that took us to Tahoe was going to suspend service from Thursday through Sunday. With that information we made the decision to leave on Wednesday night and fortunately we were able to get a bus to take us back to Sacramento.

Wednesday was another beautiful bluebird day, so we made the most of it and got out early to hit the slopes. Since Keith was staying on to ski with some family members we gave him all of our leftover food and some beverages as we didn’t want him to go hungry or thirsty!

The bus arrived at 6 and we loaded it up for the trip to Sacramento, where several people took the red-eye home, others booked rooms in nearby hotels and the ‘kids’ drove to Sonoma to spend a few days exploring some wineries. The rest of us headed back to Chicago over the next several days. It was definitely an adventure that we soon won’t forget!

Hopefully this adventure won’t discourage the newbies on the trip from joining us again. It was a pleasure to have you all(Mary Lou, Kim, Jacob and Sydney) join us on your first and hopefully not last Sitzmark adventure!

I also want to thank everyone for your understanding and help with the trip and the unexpected changes. Chris, thank you for arranging the sunset cruise, which unfortunately we didn’t get to enjoy.

The last snow total that I saw was 58 inches in 48 hours(Friday-Saturday) and it was still snowing on Sunday.

PRE-BLIZZARD...
APRES BLIZZARD...yes, it's the same area where pre-blizzard picture was taken.
